         BOOTS ON THE GROUND

The WTC is preparing to raise awareness of the organization and rally the taxpayers to join in the fight against taxing the good people of Woonsocket to the point we can’t afford to pay.  Boots On The Ground, a membership drive effort headed by Steven Lima, is organizing by asking WTC members and volunteers to walk the streets of this city and hand out the “Taxed To Death” fliers directly to the taxpayers.  “It will be an ongoing effort but we are looking for volunteers to help for this weekend or this week coming up”, said Lima.  The fliers and maps are being distributed by Jeanne at Pepin Lumber.

The WTC's Reaction To The Fiscal Year 2011 Budget

The WTC is disappointed that the Council did not take more timely and more aggressive steps in reigning in the City's unsustainable levels of spending in order to bring the City's cost-structure to an affordable level that meets the economic realities that we currently face.

The WTC hopes that, going forward, the Council and Administration will take more seriously common sense suggestions such as the minimum 25% health-care copay legislation that was requested by the WTC in January.  More specifically, we hope and expect that the Council and Administration will no longer sit passive while the General Assembly ignores our common-sense requests, but instead actively pursues these issues in the same aggressive fashion as was expended when the Council and Administration wanted General Assembly approval to issue $12 million of "deficit reduction bonds", along with the approvals to exceed the tax cap limits.  We also hope that going forward the Council and Administration will begin to hold our local General Assembly delegation accountable for their actions or inactions in addressing these critical issues.

We can no longer afford to wait for the structural changes that are so necessary to having a sustainable cost structure. Our local elected officials must demand the necessary changes and ruthlessly hold accountable those that become roadblocks to the necessary changes, as well as those who do nothing to move the ball forward.
